For the past year I have volunteered at my hospital in town, and I loved it. My duties when I work is to deliver food carts to each floor, and work a lot in the rehab center. The rehab center is my favorite. First, I can see Occupational Therapist in action. The best part of the rehab center is the fact that I can play games with all the patients. This is also makes me happy to see all their faces because they are happy to be out of their rooms and doing something. Another thing we can do is we can take the women to the "beaut parlor". They have a place in the rehab center where you can style hair, and do their make up. Even though we have all this stuff, some like to stay in their rooms. So I go room to room, and ask if they need anything and give them books. Also I had the job of delivering flowers, and see the people reactions when they receive them. My least favorite had to be dealing with some of the nurse. I would help them and they could be a little mean. I understand that they are busy, but I am there to help. I think it would make it more enjoyable if they were nice a little more. I love to be helpful to everyobe. For example, I would talking to the famlies and the patients as I would take them to their rooms. I just love being outgoing, and trying to make their day better after having to be in put in the hospital. I love volunteering, and can't wait to be in that kind of work environment.
I am so glad to hear that you enjoy volunteering. It is nice to know that people out there like helping others. When you go to place such as nursing homes, hospitals, and so on you can always tell who is truly there to help others. I always hate when you go to those places and the nurses are rude. Like you said they have a busy job, but it does not mean they always need to be rude. So I am glad your goal is to volunteer and make a happy environment for the people. I bet with that attitude you make their days so much better. Plus the key to helping others is with happiness. Why not put them in a good mood while you are there. I bet most of them become so much nicer towards you. When I had to observe the Physical Therapist at the nursing home all the old people loved me. They loved having a fresh face in the nursing home just to talk to. The one day this lady was late to lunch because she just wanted to talk. The great part about this was she was more willing to do the exercises. That was the day I learned if I want to be a Physical Therapist I have to go into it with a good attitude. If I have a good attitude at work then the patients will too. Just like you volunteering I learned a lot about the field I want to go into. There is no better way to figure out your career path than volunteering and observing!
ReplyDeleteI think the fact that you are volunteering is awesome! And I think that you wanting to be an occupational therapist is awesome too. I want to be a physical therapist and I have never been so excited and wanted to start a job, like ever. I too want to help people and what better way than to help them walk or give them better hand movement or just rid them of their pain. Your blog reminded me of when I was observing at the nursing home for PT. When the older ladies would come down they would hate doing their exercises but they loved having someone to talk to and get out of their rooms. The ladies in the therapy room were always really nice and I think that made it enjoyable for the patients coming down. Some patients would come down and be grumpy but I would be a little grumpy if I was stuck in a nursing home too! The cool thing was that they would come down for therapy and then go to lunch or go back to their room and usually they came back down. Some of the older ladies would go to the beauty salon across the hall and that was exciting for them. It was really nice one when one of the older ladies came in and said that one of the girls went around to each of their rooms and painted their nails if they wanted and the lady was really excited because she had not had her nails painted in a long time! I just think it is really nice what some people do for the people who are stuck somewhere!
