RR #6
While reading "Stay Sweet As You Are" I at first was thinking that why would a women believe something as stupid as use this and you will get a husband, but as I read more and started to think that this aim that ad companies have is dead on. Being a girl I know what it is like to want socially acceptance, and most of us want it from the opposite sex. As little kids most girls dream of their wedding day, and hope to make their husbands happy, and some will do anything to achieve that dream. Looking at the ads back then you think why would they buy it for a man? Then I started to think why do we do things in this time and age because we want acceptance. Women have this mine set that if they do not have live a certain life then they will be judge, and no one likes that. Also noticed that these ads compare to some of the ads we talked about in class. For example, in the Lux soap ad it shows Irene Dunne a girl know to have pretty skin, and claims that if you use this you will look like her. It also goes on to say that it help prevent aging. To me those comments sound similar to some beauty product ads on TV. Most ads say "Use this and you will look like...." or "Doctors and/or beauty magazines say this helps fight the signs of aging". Do we know for sure if it does; no, but we believe it because they show a person with beautiful skin and we wish we can look like that. I really enjoyed reading this passion because it was not only entertaining, but it helped me to see that the ads are kind of similar with the point of selling being social acceptance.
